I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to experience and adapt several ancient wellness practices from Indian and Chinese lineages into the wellness practices I currently offer today.
My upbringing was influenced by Hatha yoga as taught by my mother, Mary Deslaurier and her teacher Margaret Seidel. Hatha yoga originated in India from writings by Patanjali called the yoga sutras, written in Sanskrit around 400 AD. Patanjali described yoga as an "eight-limbed path" that outlined a moral and purposeful life from the outside to the inside. (Physical postures being only one of those limbs.)
My style of teaching originated with vinyasa yoga as passed down by Tirumalai Krishnamacharya. Krishnamacharya developed Vinyasa Krama as a way to revive Hatha yoga in the early 1900s in Mysore, India. By combining pranayama and asana, he made the postures an integral part of meditation instead of just a step toward it.
My teachings soon developed to include mostly yin yoga poses and philosophy. Yin yoga was created by Paulie Zink and adapted by Paul Grilley and Sarah Powers. It originated from the ancient Taoist health practices, philosophy and spiritual traditions of China. Being in harmony with the rhythm and flow of nature is the essence of Taoist philosophy.
My current teachings are yin flow and yoga nidra. Yin flow is a combination of the ancient practices listed above which I have adapted to meet the needs of the modern practitioner. Within these teachings there are components of Ayurveda - India's ancient healing system, and Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Yoga Nidra, or yogic sleep, is a technique adapted by Swami Satyananda Saraswati from the traditional tantric practice of nyasa. My teachings are derived from the Bihar Yoga tradition.
I am very grateful to live and offer these practices on the unceded traditional territory of the Coast Salish Lekwungen-speaking people (Victoria BC).
